Week 10 - Wrap Up

This has been a very fun and educational experience for me - thank you Jane and Julie!  My biggest discovery I must say that the Ancestry Database is my new favorite - I looked up one of co-workers dad and found him in the Manuscript Census Report - totally cool - I am going to have to spend some more time checking this one out....
Week 9  History and Genealogy Resources—Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Sanborn Maps

1.  Under quick Links I clicked on pictures then Passenger ships and images - I did a keyword search for Titanic and I got 6 results - several were from the Star Line.  I also used the browse function and came up with many more pictures.

2.  I clicked on newspapers then on newspapers and publications - I did a keyword search for Hindenburg and came up with 437 newspapers and 4 periodicals and magazines.

3.  I used the county I grew up in Gogebic County which is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  I searched Stories, Memories, and Histories and came up with a lot of cool stuff about the county including pictures!!

Week 8 - WorldCat and Camio (and I threw in Films on Demand for fun)

WorldCat:

1. I clicked on advanced search and typed in Martin Luther Not king I limited to:  books, juvenile books, and biography which came up with 140 records.  Two I would recommend are:  Martin Luther by Harry Emerson Fosdick at Mitchell Public Library and Martin Luther:  A Man Who Changed the World by Paul Maier at Brookings Public.

2.  I clicked on advanced search and typed in Classic and Genre/Form Graphic.  Limited to books, Juvenile, and Fiction which came up with 334 results.  I would add Bram Stokers Dracula published by Stone Arch Books in Minneapolis.

3. I clicked on advanced search and did a Title Search for "My Fair Lady"  and limited to musical scores.  The one that I would choose:  Accession # OCLC:  26429906.

Camio:

1.  I did a basic search using all the terms listed on the sheet - except at different times when the results came up I looked for the dates in the date ranged provided.  I found various examples of dresses and I thought the results where not very numerous.

2.  We recently subscribed to Films on Demand (a documentary movie database) and I thought I would try there as well and I did in fact find a wonderful documentary called The Victorians which focused on fashion!!

Week 7 - Ebscohost E-Books

1.  I found a great book on hiking in the Black Hills of South Dakota - I think patrons would like this feature if given a proper demonstration.  I know I like people to watch what I am doing and I try to go slow to make sure they are getting it.

2.  Search for Fairy Tale and click on Also Search with the full text of the articles.  I came up with 1876 results so I limited to Fairy Tales under Subject and the results list were the different color fairy tale books by Andrew Long:

The Violet Fairy Book
The Red Fairy Book
The Yellow Fairy Book
The Blue Fairy Book
Week 6:  Gale Reference Library

1.  Under subjects I clicked on Nations of the World - next I explored Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of World Holiday and Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of Foods and Recipes of the World.   These are both awesome resources I found a recipe for Chocolate Mousse - YUM!!  I explored rituals from Spain and found a recipe for Paella - it looks very ambitious!

2.  I explored the book Geographical Concepts - I have an MA in Geography so it was neat to see some of the terms I learned from both grad and undergrad!!

Week 5 Proquest:

Proquest is my go to database - lots of subjects with lots of full text options!!  This is where I tell students to begin their research projects!!

1.  Here is what I did:

I typed in "literary criticism" and "les miserables" and clicked on full text.

On the next page I excluded review, theater, motion pictures, film studies, music, and musical theater.

I finally came up with 550 results - I thought that was still a bit unmanageable so I limited to only articles published since 2000 and my final number was 293 which I thought was a good number and I gave the results list a quick once over and thought there were a lot of good articles here!

2.  I typed in "hurricane sandy" and librarians in the search box and then limited it to articles just from 2012 came up with 91 really good articles.

Week 4:

SIRS Discoverer:

1.  Solar System and Lexile Score between 100 - 1120. Lots of great information on the solar system.

2.  1.  Search for Volcanoes limit to Graphics and Pictures 2.  Click on Pictures search for Volcanoes.  I liked both types of searches and I really enjoy SIRS - such a wide variety of topics and TONS of information!!

SIRS Issues Researcher:

I tell all the speech classes about SIRS Issues Researcher  - such a great place to go to get speech topic ideas!!!

1.  Leading Issues:  Teenagers, Suicidal Behavior, I then clicked on Suicide Prevention and came up with 4 websites.  I think so these sites have been through a vetting process and will be more reliable then just googling.

2.  I searched "water use"  which brought up  leading issue - such a wealth of information - and so well organized.
